Memory of the Underground Struggle

World War II. Ukrainian Insurgent Army

The Ukrainian liberation movement of the mid-20th century became a symbol of long-term resistance against the empire and the struggle for Ukrainians’ right to their own memory and future. After years of underground activities and repression, participants in the liberation movement preserved the history of the struggle through memoirs, books, research and public engagement.

The contemporary authors of this section—Andrii Humeniuk, Viktor Kravtsov and Artur Dron—carry on the tradition of preserving memory and cultural resistance. Through literature, art, work with youth, civil initiatives, charity and cultural projects, they pass on the experience of their generation. For them, culture becomes not an escape from the war, but a way to speak about human dignity, losses, responsibility and Ukraine’s right to its own voice in the world.
