Training center and department for treatment of stress-related disorders opened at Lisova Poliana War Veterans Hospital

published on 15 February 2021 15:15

As of today, a training center and a new department for the treatment of stress-related disorders have been opened at the Lisova Poliana War Veterans Hospital on the basis of the Mental Health Center.

The center, which will become a training platform for other hospitals, was opened as part of the first stage of the Veterans Medical Institution Development Strategy.

In the department, veterans will be able to be treated for disorders associated with extreme psychological stress, the consequences of traumatic brain injury, contusions.

“Currently, Ukraine does not have a developed system of facilities for providing specialized assistance to veterans, approaches to rehabilitation are not unified and evidence-free methods are often used,” underlined Kseniia Voznitsyna, chief physician of the Lisova Poliana War Veterans Hospital. With the assistance of the Center, the standards of such care will be disseminated in medical institutions of this profile across the country.

The event has been attended by Minister for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine Yuliia Laputina.

“It is very nice to see a veteran medical institution that is developing and looking for the latest approaches and methods of treatment and rehabilitation. The most effective method implemented here is a human-centered approach to treatment. The hospital is trying to move away from the "post-Soviet" attitude toward patients and to equip a truly effective modern treatment space for our defenders. I believe that this facility will become a world-class medical center, and effective treatment methods will be developed on its basis, which will be implemented throughout the country,” highlighted the Minister.

She also added that the creation of effective state mechanisms for returning defenders to active life remains a focal issue.

“An active, successful, healthy veteran is the key to the national security of our country,” Yuliia Laputina stressed.

The presentation was also attended by Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine Iryna Mykychak, OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine Ambassador Henrik Villadsen, MPs of Ukraine, representatives of various veterans organizations.

In 2019, the Center for Mental Health and Rehabilitation of War Veterans was established on the basis of the state institution Lisova Poliana War Veterans Hospital of the Health Ministry. Soldiers participating in hostilities, volunteers, as well as victims of captivity and torture are eligible to be treated at the Center.
